All you need is a “Friend”…

I was a public school kid, and I think I turned out - OK, so I have always been a huge advocate for the public school system.  Due to some timing issues with Morgan, she did end up going to a private school.  It was a decision we really thought about, because let’s face it – there is a huge cost.  From day one Morgan has thrived at Friends Select, and I figured how bad is eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day, if Morgan gets to have this amazing education.

From day one, Morgan’s teachers – ALL of them from pre-k to 2nd grade, immediately were there for Morgan in this bizarre life we are now living as a family with cancer.  They have all visited, especially her 2nd grade teacher, who is a survivor herself.  One of the mothers of Morgan’s friend in her class suggested to the school that maybe they could organize a bone marrow drive, or get the word out that we were looking for donors. The school jumped right on board.  Here is the letter that just went out to all of the families within our Friends Select community…which is another reason I will be eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a few more years:

Friends Select School
Dear Friends Select School Community Member,

I am writing to you to inform you of a community member in need. A second grade student at our school was diagnosed with leukemia this year and will need a bone marrow transplant.  A small fraction of the people who need bone marrow transplants are able to find a donor match among members of their families.  Most turn to the National Bone Marrow registry.  Registering does not commit you to donating your marrow, even if you are found to be a match.  The procedure required to become a donor is simply a cheek swab. A kit for doing the test can be obtained online or you can go to a clinic or bone marrow drive near you.  There is a $52.00 processing fee associated with the lab work and registration.  All of the particulars about where to go and what to expect can be found at:

The second grade student in question has invited members of our community to visit the blog she and her parents have established to share her story.  You can reach this Web site by going to:

Thank you.  I hope this information is useful if you or someone you know chooses to explore this further.

Sincerely,
